In the time of the Spirits, all was peaceful and well. Birds of all kinds, even those preyed upon by others, were at ease. The code of lockenrise had been established between birds of prey, and birds that were preyed upon. In the language of the SkyNatives, or Grand Spirits, “lockenrise” meant, when a bird was about to be killed by and eagle, owl, or other raptor, it must lock eyes with its predator and the predator must do the same. This gave thanks to the prey that it would support the raptor and permission from the prey to be killed and eaten, and ONLY killed and eaten. The spirit of the prey would turn into a SkySpirit and then rise to the SkySpirit Haven.

Small bands of around 50 eagles or so were formed, at the wishes of the SkyNative chiefs. Smaller birds, like sparrows and robins, formed flocks of hundreds or more individuals. Then, four bands joined together to form a tribe. Soon after, all birds belonged to a tribe. Both large and small had found belonging. It was the period of triumph prophesied by the SkySpirits long ago. Food was plentiful and the forests grew tall and wide, covering much of the SkyNative’s land. In the time of the Spirits, no kingdoms nor kings ruled nor existed. All living things were equal, and all were at harmony. It was the time of the Great Dawn.

But this time of happiness and agreement suddenly turned to the opposite when Lanarr, a young  Golden eagle, refused many a time to follow the land’s only rule—lockenrise. Lanarr was a greedy and powerful bird, who, even born to the great SkyNative Spirit Tynee, felt he should rule over all the others. He formed a fighting force and called it the Skyfighters. His group grew larger every day with bloodthirsty or power-hungry eagles. Lanarr formed a system of ranking, with he being General and his brother Bluemoon as deputy, or second-in-command. All others were warriors or trainees. If a female wished to have a brood of eggs, Lanarr would gladly stop for seasons if it meant to add to his band. Soon, the band turned into a tribe of many bands, and many trainees were at work. After all was settled and all the youngsters had turned warriors, the tribe of Darkbeam set out on a conquest to rule all of the SkyNative’s land.

Unbeknownst to the Lanarr and his Darkbeam tribe, the rest of the birds had started to try and train for aerial combat. They strongly disapproved with the notion of fighting, but with Lanarr on the loose;they were not safe as they one had been. So when the screech of a battle cry ripped through the forest’s silence one midnight, all the SkyNative birds large and small were ready.

The war between the SkyNative tribes and the Darkbeams raged for over a year. Many, many deaths occurred and were revenged in cold blood by the Darkbeams. The strongest Darkbeam bands, the Crestfalls, were leading all fleets and sieges. They were stealthy and lethal; a fatal combination of skill against the SkyNative tribes. Even being obviously outnumbered—which the SkyNatives thought was their advantage— the Crestfalls and the other Darkbeam bands were victorious with their skill, agility, and sheer size and strength. All eagles under the command of Lanarr were literally larger than SkyNatives. The Darkbeams got more food ( never using lockenrise;it was against the SkyFighter Law) because of their being feared by all and were granted safe passage, as others did not want to get on their bad side.

The battle was won, the war was not. It has never ceased, as even the modern Darkbeam eagles fight amongst themselves. Lanarr’s treachery has not left , and will never do so unless the eagles of the Darkbeam tribe stick together and restore peace. Then, a New Dawn will rise, and the SkyFighters will fight no more. Peace will be restored, and one eagle knows it more than any.

One of my two main original stories; this and Duma.

Alright, this was inspired by Garudians of Gahoole and Swordbird.
There might be similarities; I'm going to change those. Just read this for now! :)

Let me know what you think; I'm going to post the first two chapters as well!
